The Indian Leather Industry Foundation (ILIFO) is a non-profit organization established to address environmental, infrastructure, health, and safety issues within the leather and allied industries. Ambur and Vaniyambadi in Tamil Nadu constitute a major leather cluster represented by AMBURTEC/VANITEC, making a substantial contribution to the country's leather exports. However, this cluster faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of inadequate infrastructure, including issues related to wastewater disposal, product development, and marketing facilities. To sustain its position as the leading producer of leather goods and products nationally and aspire to become an international hub for the leather industry, Amburtec and Vanitec collaboratively established the Ambur Economic Development Organization (AEDOL) on July 23, 2001. The organization aims to leverage schemes implemented by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Government of India, for an integrated infrastructure development program. This initiative seeks to enable the clusters to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge by recycling treated water and meeting all existing environmental standards.
Founded in 1986, Vanitec Limited pioneered the establishment of the first Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for tannery clusters in India. The CETP, situated in Valayampet, Vaniyambadi, has been continuously operational since its commissioning in May 1991. The company's commitment to evolving wastewater treatment processes reflects its dedication to sustainability and environmentally conscious practices.
PROCESS - FROM 1991 TO 2013:
Wastewater treatment at Vanitec Limited, initiated in 1991, followed a 2-stage process. The Primary Treatment stage involved the removal of coarse debris and suspended solids from the wastewater. Subsequently, the remaining dissolved organics underwent degradation in a biological treatment phase, utilizing a consortium of bacteria. This process aimed to bring the wastewater to a condition suitable for discharge into the River Palar.
PROCESS - FROM 2013 ONWARDS:
In 2013, Vanitec Limited transitioned to a more advanced wastewater treatment system, implementing the Zero Liquid Discharge System. This marked a significant shift from discharging effluent into the River Palar. The new 4-stage process ensured complete recovery and reuse of water within member-tanneries, and the recovery of crystalline salt for safe disposal. The stages include:
